Hillary Clinton says Russias stance may contribute to Syria civil war

Image
May 31, 2012 - 19:55 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Russia on Thursday, May 31 that its refusal to sanction UN action against Syria could see the outbreak of a civil war in the Middle Eastern country, RIA Novosti reported. The Russians "are telling me they don't want to see a civil war. I have been telling them their policy is going to help to contribute to a civil war," she told students on a visit to the Danish capital of Copenhagen. "The Syrians are not going to listen to us," she added. "They will listen maybe to the Russians, so we have to keep pushing them." United Nations Security Council veto-wielding members Russia and China have twice vetoed UN sanctions against Syria. Moscow accuses the West of a pro-rebel bias and says it is trying to bring about regime change in Damascus. The Kremlin has also criticized proposals by Western powers to arm the rebels, saying this would merely prolong the conflict. Russ...

Clinton argues against Syria military intervention

Image
By Arshad Mohammed | Reuters 22 mins ago COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday laid out arguments against armed intervention in Syria despite last week's massacre in the town of Houla. Speaking to Danish students, Clinton got tough questions on what might motivate the United States and other nations to take military action in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad is battling a 14-month-old anti-government uprising. Friday's massacre of more than 100 civilians, many of them children, in Houla has triggered calls for the West to take more robust action in Syria, despite Russian and Chinese opposition. However, Clinton rehearsed U.S. arguments against armed intervention for now in contrast with Libya, where Western-led air strikes last year helped end Muammar Gaddafi 's rule. Clinton said Syria had a more diverse society with greater ethnic divisions, no unified opposition, stronger air defenses and a much more capable military than L...

The Hack That Wasnt: Sec. Clinton and Operation AdWords

Image
When news outlets recently quoted U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton claiming that State Department operatives hacked the websites of al-Qaida affiliates in Yemen, we didnt know whether to be proud of the feds leet skills or appalled at the administrations hypocrisy regarding hacking. Turns out the hacks who wrote the stories got it wrong though Danger Rooms David Axe, who was on the scene, got the story right the first go-around . And now, with the hyped headlines dialed back, were just disappointed. Turns out the team simply purchased anti-al-Qaida ads on the websites to counter anti-American ads the sites were running. Call it Operation AdWords, if you like. US hacked Al-Qaeda to undermine propaganda: Hillary Clinton

Washington: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that US experts scored a cyberwarfare coup by hacking into websites run by Al Qaeda's Yemeni branch and changing the message to undermine their propaganda. In a speech in Tampa, Florida late Wednesday, Mrs Clinton said that the success was staged by the State Department's new Center for Strategic Communications, which also draws experts from the intelligence and defense communities. One team, she said, targeted a propaganda campaign launched two weeks ago by the Yemeni-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula which was "bragging about killing Americans and trying to recruit new supporters" on key tribal websites. "Within 48 hours, our team plastered the same sites with altered versions of the ads that showed the toll Al Qaeda attacks have taken on the Yemeni people," Clinton said during a dinner at the Special Operations Command. "And we can tell that our efforts are starting to have an impact, because ...

Hillary Clinton boasts of US cyberwar against al-Qaeda

Mrs Clinton described the cyber effort as part of a larger, multi-pronged attack on terrorism that goes beyond attacks like the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden to include the propaganda battle, and the longer, slower campaign of diplomats. Mrs Clinton was speaking alongside Admiral Bill McRaven, head of the US Special Operations Command, at a conference of hundreds of US and international special operations commanders. Their joint appearance was seen as a tacit message to their sometimes warring tribes of troops and diplomats that they must cooperate. Mrs Clinton said the cyber attack was launched by an interagency group of specialists, including diplomats, special operators and intelligence analysts, housed at the State Department. Called the Centre for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications, its experts patrol the Internet and social media to counter al-Qaeda's attempts to recruit new followers. "Together, they will work to pre-empt, discredit and outmaneuver e...

Hillary Clinton: US hacked Yemeni al-Qaida sites

T AMPA, Fla. The State Department has launched a different sort of raid against al-Qaida hacking into al-Qaida websites in Yemen. In a rare public admission of the covert cyber war against extremists, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says U.S. cyber experts based at the State Department hacked tribal websites, replacing al-Qaida propaganda that bragged about killing Americans. "Within 48 hours, our team plastered the same sites with altered versions of the ads that showed the toll al-Qaida attacks have taken on the Yemeni people," Clinton said Wednesday. "Extremists are publicly venting their frustration and asking supporters not to believe everything they read on the Internet." Speaking alongside Adm. Bill McRaven, head of the U.S. Special Operations Command, Clinton said the effort is part of a multipronged attack on terrorism that goes beyond raids like the one that killed Osama bin Laden to include diplomats working alongside special operations forces...

Clinton, Panetta urge US Senate to ratify sea treaty

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Pentagon chief Leon Panetta urged the Senate on Wednesday to ratify a UN treaty on the law of the sea, arguing it was vital for the country's economic and military interests. President Barack Obama's administration has launched a fresh push for approval of the treaty, saying major US industries are losing out on commercial opportunities and Washington's diplomatic leadership is being undermined by the Senate's failure to ratify the convention. "We are on the sidelines," Clinton told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "We believe it is imperative to act now," she said. Both Clinton and Panetta said the treaty was needed to bolster US credibility as it seeks to counter Beijing's claims in the South China Sea as well as Iran's threats over oil shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. "You have all followed the claims that countries are making in the South China Sea. Although we do not have territory t...

5 reasons the Clinton-Biden switcheroo will never happen

The rumor that President Obama will dump Joe Biden from his ticket for Hillary Clinton just won't die. Here's why it should President Obama would be foolish not to dump Vice President Joe Biden from his re-election ticket and rope in Secretary of State Hillary Clinton , according to a growing chorus of, well, mostly conservative and Republican commentators. At The Weekly Standard , William Kristol argues that Clinton would help Obama win back white working-class voters; The Washington Times ' Joseph Curl says that Clinton's enormous popularity would put Obama over the top. Even some liberals, like The Daily Beast 's Michael Tomasky, are pushing the idea , arguing that Clinton would give Obama an election-ensuring 20-point advantage among female voters. Maybe so, but here are five reasons the much-ballyhooed Biden-Clinton switcheroo just won't happen: 1. Everyone denies, believably, that the change is in the works The idea of swapping Clinton for Biden h...

Hillary Clinton Maintains Near Record-High Favorability

Image
PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans remain nearly as positive toward Hillary Clinton today as they have ever been over the past 20 years. The secretary of state's favorable rating remains at 66%, within one percentage point of her record-high rating in late 1998. Her unfavorable rating of 29% ties her record low since 1993. Gallup's latest update of Clinton's favorable rating is from a USA Today /Gallup poll conducted May 10-13. Her 66% favorable rating, the same as she received in March 2011 and February 1999, is one point lower than the 67% high she reached in December 1998 just after her husband, President Bill Clinton, had been impeached by the House of Representatives. Her current 29% unfavorable rating is on the low end of the ratings she has received; her record low is a 21% unfavorable rating in 1992, but in that poll, more than one in five had no opinion. Clinton's average favorable rating since 1992 has been 53%, but has undergone significant shifts over that time, as ...
