Published: March. 28, 2012 at 2:30 AM WASHINGTON, March 28 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Syrian President Bashar Assad must prove he is committed to U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan 's peace plan. Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general, said Tuesday he had received a letter in which Assad agreed to the six-point plan, endorsed by the U.N. Security Council. The plan calls for talks between the opposition and the regime in an "inclusive Syrian-led political process," a cease-fire and troop withdrawal, humanitarian assistance in areas hurt by the fighting, the release of people arbitrarily detained, free journalistic access and respect for "freedom of association and the right to demonstrate peacefully." Speaking ahead of a gathering of Western and Arab nations in Istanbul to discuss a political transition in Syria, Clinton strongly pressed the Syrian opposition to lay out a vision of an inclusive Syria in ...

Women in the World Summit

Image
E-mail Print Share Women in the World Summit Worldpress.org March 26, 2012 It seems that Hillary Clinton saved the best for last in her closing speech at the third annual Women in the World summit at Lincoln Center in New York on March 10th. There was palpable excitement in the house leading up to the final half hour, which featured Hillary Clinton, preceded by an introductory tribute from Meryl Streep who held up her Oscar and said "this is what you get for playing a world leader, but this is what you get when you are one," as Clinton walked on stage. I cannot believe what just happened, Clinton exclaimed, saying she had no idea what Streep would do by way of introduction. Anticipating perhaps a reprise of the actresss various roles, Clinton pronounced herself relieved that Streep hadnt made The Devil Wears Pantsuits, a reference to Clintons tribute to the pantsuits that got her through the presidential race. Clinton OKs $1.3B in military aid to Egypt

Published: March. 24, 2012 at 1:58 PM WASHINGTON, March 24 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton approved $1.3 billion in annual military aid to Egypt, waiving congressionally mandated democratic reform conditions. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Clinton waived the conditions based on U.S. national security interests and a goal of maintaining a strategic partnership with Egypt, Voice of America reported. "What we are looking to do here is to continue to work with Egyptian partners on the kind of future that they want for Egypt and that is in our mutual interest," Nuland said. Under a law passed by Congress in December, Egypt's military rulers are required to support a transition to a civilian government, hold free and fair elections and protect freedom of religion and association as conditions for receiving the aid. VOA said Clinton assured U.S. lawmakers Egypt was meeting obligations in a peace treaty with Israel and had made "signifi...

Hillary Clinton on Kissinger, Albright and Women

Departing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently shared some of the wisdom gleaned from twenty years in the White House with Mitt Romney's favorite magazine , The Economist . Clinton has visited 95 countries and traveled 730,000 miles since joining Obama's cabinet, and Kirsten Gillibrand recently told BuzzFeed that she'll be "one of the first to ask Hillary to run in 2016." Some of the choice bits: By means of introduction: "Ive been really at the highest levels of American political life," she said. You don't say, Hil! On Henry Kissinger and social media: "I kid my good friend, Henry Kissinger. Can you imagine, in a world of Twitter, being able to sneak out of Pakistan and fly to China and do secret negotiations?" Clinton opens way to resume aid to Egypt

Image
By Lachlan Carmichael | AFP 1 hr 2 mins ago US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave the green light Friday to resume $1.3 billion in annual military aid to Egypt despite fears it is slipping in its avowed transition to democracy . The move marked the denouement of a crisis in the 30-year-old US-Egyptian alliance that erupted over a crackdown in December on pro-democracy groups by Egypt's interim military rulers. "Today, Secretary Clinton has certified to Congress that Egypt is meeting its obligations under its peace treaty with Israel," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement. The move clears the way for $250 million in economic aid this year, which had not been in serious question. "The secretary has also waived legislative conditions related to Egypt's democratic transition , on the basis of America's national security interests, allowing for the continued flow of foreign military financing to Egypt," Nuland said.
