Posted at 11:45 AM ET, 11/30/2012 Nov 30, 2012 04:45 PM EST TheWashingtonPost (Jim Watson - AFP/Getty Images) Hillary Clinton is not running for president. Nope, shes said. Not happening. Wait, was that a wink? The secretary of state, who has repeatedly said shed like to spend the next chapter of her life out of the political limelight, maybe as a professional grandmother , on Thursday joked about her status as the most speculated-about potential 2016 candidate. Clinton regaled the audience of a conference sponsored by the Foreign Policy Group and the State Departments Office of Policy Planning with a story about Jake Sullivan , director of policy planning. She indicated t! hat he had presidential potential himself: I told my husband about this incredibly bright rising star Rhodes Scholar, Yale Law School and my husband said, Well, if he ever learns to play the saxophone, watch out. That got some yuks. Then she delivered the killer line. Now we travel all over the world togeth...

Her term ends next month, and she has said she does not want a second term. Hillary Clinton unveils 'global blueprint' to 'wipe out' AIDS

Washington, Nov 30 ( ANI ): US. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has unveiled what she described as a " blueprint " to guide global efforts in wiping out the AIDS virus. The blueprint, officially titled the 'President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Blueprint: Creating an AIDS-free Generation,' focuses on improving treatment and prevention practices to 'get ahead of the pandemic.' According to CNN, the initiative is part of a plan to 'usher in an AIDS-free generation,' said Clinton, who hailed a 200 percent increase in U.S.-funded antiretroviral drug treatments since 2008. Clinton announced the plan at the State Department , two days ahead of World AIDS Day . She was joined by Eric Goosby, U.S. global AIDS coordinator. "We can reach a point where virtually no children are born with the virus," the report quoted Clinton, as saying. She added that the plan also aims to further reduce transmission rates and increase access to m...

Hillary Clinton Unveils Plan for a World Without AIDS

WASHINGTON, November 30 (RIA Novosti) - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday unveiled a blueprint for ending the deadly AIDS virus worldwide, a two-pronged plan that requires increased prevention efforts and greater access to treatment she said would someday lead to an AIDS-free generation. We can reach a point where virtually no children are born with the virus, and as these children become teenagers and adults, they are at a far lower risk of becoming infected than they are today, Clinton said at a press conference to announce the plan. And if they do acquire HIV, they have access to treatment that helps prevent them from not only developing AIDS, but from passing the virus on to others, she added. The blueprint was developed at Clintons request by the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a US government initiative launched under former President George W. Bush to help save the lives of HIV and AIDS victims around the world. The plan spells out a set of sp...

Amy Davidson in The New Yorker on Hillary Clinton "Do Clintons ever truly go away?" Amy Davidson asks on the eve of Hillary Clinton 's retirement from the State Department. Clinton insists that she won't make a 2016 presidential bid, but pundits gazing into crystal balls already see her as the Democratic frontrunner. Before speculating on where Clinton's going, Davidson takes a moment to review where she came from. "The true transformation in the past few years may have been not in Clintons character or approach but in the way she is now ensconced in a Washington establishment that she and her husband once challenged," she writes, arguing that perhaps Clinton should take her canonization as a cue to exit. "There is something enervating about the idea of sitting around for a couple of years wondering about what Hillary wants, and waiting for her next introduction. Can we ask if it might be time to say goodbye?" RELATED: U.S. Counter-Terrori...

Bill and Hillary Clinton to visit Northern Ireland

Bill and Hillary Clinton are to visit Northern Ireland on Friday, December 7, according to senior political sources in Dublin. Mrs Clinton, who is the US Secretary of State, will be in Dublin for a meeting of the Organisation for European Security and Co-Operation, which is being held from December 6-7. Ireland is currently president of the organisation. Senior political sources there say they have been told that she will arrive in Dublin on 5th. The plan is that she will attend the session on the 6th and travel North on the 7th, where she will meet her husband Bill, the former US President. Last month the Belfast Telegraph revealed that she would visit Northern Ireland. The trip may be one of Mrs Clintons last foreign engagements as Secretary of State, the equivalent of Americas Foreign Minister. Her term runs out on January 20 and she has stated publicly that she does not want a second term, though no replacement has so far been named. Since being appointed on November 21, 2008, she ...

Why Hillary Clinton in 2016 is Not Inevitable

Image
November 27, 2012 Marc Ambinder gives five reasons why the conventional wisdom on Hillary Clinton might be wrong. "If I had to bet, I'd bet that she decides to run, if only because she will feel that destiny and circumstance have put her in the right place at the right time. She may feel that she owes it to young women and those who supported her to finish the marathon of American politics. But she might well decide that her legacy is secure, her popularity is intact, her financial prospects are bright, and her future lies with advocacy from the outside and grand-mothering."

Clinton keeps up U.S. pressure over Egypt's political crisis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr on Monday to underscore U.S. hopes that Egypt 's political crisis can be resolved in a democratic manner , the State Department said. Clinton reiterated U.S. concerns about Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi 's decision to assume sweeping powers and checked in on the progress of discussions between Mursi and senior judges on the way forward, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news briefing. "The secretary underscored the importance of settling these disputes in a democratic manner, so we look forward to seeing the outcome of that (discussion)," Nuland said. "We are encouraged that the various important stakeholders in Egypt are now talking to each other, (and) that President Mursi is consulting on the way forward, but we're not going to prejudge where that is going to go." Mursi's crisis talks on Monday followed a pres...

State of War

Illustration by Thomas Fuchs I t was Tuesday morning in Phnom Penh when Barack Obama decided to dispatch Hillary Clinton to the Middle East to try to help defuse the mounting conflict in Gaza. Clinton had been traveling at Obamas side on his swing through Thailand, Burma, and Cambodiabut now duty called, and she was off to Jerusalem, Ramallah, and Cairo. So peripatetic has Clinton been as secretary of State that it seemed perversely fitting that what was billed as her final foreign trip with her boss would be cut short this way. And while news of cease-fire talks in Gaza came hours before she touched down in the region, the sequence of events was a vivid reminder of the stature that Clinton has gained in the job: For the past four years, she has been Obamas go-to gal in any global crisis. Clintons impending departure, in other words, presents the president with a massive pair of pumps to filland a domestic political skirmish far less bloody than, but nearly as bloody-minded as, the one...

How Hillary Clintons past choices predict her future

On a recent Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton walked with her husband onto a stage at the New York Sheraton to cheers and whoops and a standing ovation that only got louder as she tried to quiet things down. It was a friendly crowd the annual meeting of her husbands foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative and people may have been eager to hear her speech about using U.S. aid to target investment barriers such as old land tenure laws. But really, they were there to see her. Shes just looked so sad and so tired, said Ritu Sharma, a womens rights activist, referring to Clintons appearances in the days after the attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. They wanted to defend her, to rave about her, to say how sick they were of people talking about her hair, and then to talk about her hair, which, several men and women offered, definitely looked best in a simple chignon. Mostly, though, people wondered what t...

After Hillary Clinton and Colin Powell, can a white man be named Secretary of State?

Perhaps more notably, he is one of the few unsuccessful White House aspirants to emerge from defeat with his reputation actually enhanced. The senior Senator from Massachusetts has been a steady voice of conscience in the Senate, urging attention to atrocities in Sudan, engaging in personal diplomacy with Pakistan and being an early advocate of a no-fly zone in Libya. But Susan Rice is considered President Obama's favourite for the office, much to conservatives' consternation. She is eminently qualified for the post, having first served in the Clinton administration's State Department. A Rhodes Scholar, Rice was a protg of Madeline Albright and has emerged as a trusted voice for the Obama administration at the UN. When first appointed ambassador in 2009, she was the second youngest person to hold the post at age 44 and the first African-American woman. It is interesting and historically significant that President Obama's foreign policy team is driven by women. The Lib...

What's next for Hillary Clinton?

The secretary of state has made it clear she'll be stepping aside as President Obama prepares for his second term Secretary of State Hillary Clinton 's southeast Asia trip with President Obama, which ended Tuesday when she jetted off to the Middle East, is scheduled to be her final overseas tour with the president before she steps aside after four years as his top diplomat. Clinton began the job fresh off her bitter rivalry with Obama in the 2008 Democratic primaries, but over the course of Obama's first term the two became effective allies. Clinton's aides say she's weary after traveling back and forth across the globe, and looking forward to some time to rest. They expect her to be back after her batteries are recharged, though Clinton says she wants to get more exercise, travel for pleasure , and see if she can get beyond simply feeling tired. The question is, what will be her next role on the public stage? Here, four possibilities: 1. Dems want Hillary for ...

Israel Hamas conflict: Hillary Clinton welcomes Gaza ceasefire

"The United States welcomes today the agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza. For it to hold, the rocket attacks must end, and broader calm return,'' said Mrs Clinton, speaking in Cairo. Announcing the ceasefire in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr said it would come into force at 9pm local time - which would give 1.7 million Palestinians respite from days of ferocious air strikes and halt rocket attacks from Gaza that for the first time reached Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. "This is a critical moment for the region. Egypt's new government is assuming the responsibility and leadership that has long made this country a cornerstone in regional stability and peace," she said. Source: Reuters

Hillary Clinton: US commitment to Israel remains 'rock solid'

But Mrs Clinton made no reference to an agreement to end hostilities and indicated that she expected negotiations to stretch over several days. "In these days ahead, the United States will work with our partners here in Israel and across the region for an outcome that bolsters security for the peace of Israel, improves conditions for the people of Gaza and moves toward a comprehensive peace for all people of the region," said Mrs Clinton. She also reaffirmed Washington's message that much of the onus rested on a Hamas leadership which rules Gaza but is officially branded a terrorist network by the United States. "The rocket attacks from terrorist organisations inside Gaza on these (Israeli) cities and towns must end and a broader calm restored," said Mrs Clinton. "The goal must be a durable outcome that promotes regional stability and advances the security and legitimate aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians alike." Mr Netanyahu for his part said he...

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rushing to Middle East. Why now?

On Tuesday President Obama sent Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to the Middle East in an attempt to end the deadly fight between Israel and Hamas . Why now? After all, to this point US involvement in the escalating war of missiles and air strikes has seemed reticent , instead of forceful. The short answer as to why Secretary Clinton is suddenly involved in shuttle diplomacy is that the conflict may have reached a moment when the presence of a high-ranking American official can do some good. In that sense Clintons trip may be a lagging indicator of a possible cease-fire, not a leading one. Presidents dont generally like to dispatch their secretaries of State to war zones unless theyre fairly sure something positive will occur during the trip. Otherwise, the US looks even weaker, as if they tried to influence events, but nobody would listen. Who is Hamas? 5 questions about the Palestinian militant group. And indeed, following the announcement of Clintons visit, media repor...

Hillary Clinton Middle East: President Obama Sends Secretary Of State To Mideast Amid Gaza Crisis

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia President Barack Obama dispatched Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to the Middle East on Tuesday as the U.S. urgently seeks to contain the bloody conflict between Israel and Hamas. Clinton hastily departed for the region from Cambodia, where she had joined Obama for summit meetings with Asian leaders. The White House said she would make three stops, meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Palestinian officials in Ramallah and Egyptian leaders in Cairo. Clinton's trip marks the Obama administration's most forceful engagement in the weeklong conflict that has killed more than 100 Palestinians and three Israelis, with hundreds more wounded. While the U.S. has backed Israel's right to defend itself against rocket fire from Gaza, the Obama administration has warned its ally against pursuing a ground assault t...

Hillary Clinton asks world leaders to help reduce tensions in Gaza

WASHINGTON: Emphasizing on Israel's right to "self-defence", US secretary of state Hillary Clinton has asked many world leaders to use their influence to work for an immediate de-escalation of tensions in Gaza. Clinton, who is on a tour of South East Asia, spoke to many world leaders over the phone in an effort to de-escalate tensions in Gaza as soon as possible. "In all these conversations, the Secretary underscored Israel's right to selfdefence when rockets are falling on its citizens, and the urgent need for all leaders with influence to use it to seek an immediate de-escalation of tensions," State department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said.
