Clinton faces personal test in blind dissident Chen Guangcheng firestorm

China and the U.S. are close to working out a face-saving deal that would allow Chen Guangcheng to leave China with his wife and children, a U.S.-based rights campaigner has told The Daily Telegraph. News of the potential deal came as U.S. diplomats scrambled to resolve a crisis precipitated after the blind human rights activist escaped from house arrest and reportedly sought U.S. diplomatic protection. Bob Fu, of the Texas-based group ChinaAid, which has been in contact with Mr Chen's Chinese supporters, said a deal was possible in the next 24 to 48 hours. It is hoped that the deal can be concluded before Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, arrives in Beijing for high-level U.S.-China strategic and economic dialogue, which begins on Thursday. "The Chinese top leaders are deliberating a faster solution and the decision could come soon," Mr Fu said. "It could mean today, tomorrow or after the dialogue but I certainly sense that both sides want to have a solution ...

Can US contain flap over dissident, before Hillary Clinton gets to China?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a high-level entourage are set to arrive in Beijing Thursday for economic and security talks with China. The US custody of Chinese dissident Chen Guangchen jeopardizes that meeting, but some analysts say it's likely to proceed regardless. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton no doubt hopes the diplomatically delicate case of Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng , who escaped house arrest and then sought refuge with US authorities in Beijing , can be resolved before she and a high-level entourage including Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner arrive in the Chinese capital Thursday. Skip to next paragraph Both American and Chinese officials are tight-lipped on their deliberations over the rights advocate, whose treatment has figured prominently in official Western protests of China s human rights record. Mr. Chen, blind since childhood, is a self-taught legal authority and critic of the forced abortions he exposed through risky investigation...

Chen, a blind, self-taught lawyer, evaded guards who had kept him under house arrest for more than 18 months in a small eastern village and made his way to Beijing on April 22, friends and fellow activists said last week. Once in the capital, Chen moved from one safe house to another before finding refuge at the U.S. Embassy, according to Hu Jia, a fellow activist and one of the few people to have seen Chen since he arrived in Beijing. The situation presents an extraord...

Obama, Bill And Hillary Clinton Deepen Political And Policy Ties

WASHINGTON Once a tense rivalry, the relationship between President Barack Obama and Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton has evolved into a genuine political and policy partnership. Both sides have a strong incentive in making the alliance work, especially in an election year. For Obama, Bill Clinton is a fundraising juggernaut, a powerful reminder to voters that a Democrat ran the White House the last time the economy was thriving. For the spotlight-loving former president, stronger ties with the White House and campaign headquarters mean he gets a hand in shaping the future of the party he led for nearly a decade. Obama's re-election campaign has put Bill Clinton on notice that he will be used as a top surrogate, further evidence of how far the two camps have come since the bitter days of the 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton, now his sec...

US President Barack Obama speaks during the White House Correspondents Association Dinner in Washington. Picture: Saul Loeb Source: AFP IT was a case of deja vu at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in Washington DC when President Barack Obama took a swipe at Donald Trump for the second year running. "My fellow Americans, we gather during a historic anniversary. Last year, on this weekend, we finally delivered justice to one of the world's most notorious individuals," Mr Obama said to a ballroom of politicians, journalists and celebrities. But they were not shown a photo of former al Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, who was killed a year ago - instead the guests roared with laughter as a picture of Mr Trump, who had previously considered a run for the nation's highest office, was screened. Ahead of the 2012 elections in November, the President reminisced about the changes that had taken place during his first term in office. "Four years ago, I...

Hillary Clinton Recalls Raid That Killed Osama bin Laden

Hillary Clinton says combat in Iraq and Afghanistan helped hone the SEAL Team Six assault on Osama bin Laden's compound one year ago. Recounting that night, the U.S. Secretary of State recalls a Special Forces officer speaking with administration officials outside a small room under the White House. "This may sound really exotic and scary to you all, but we've probably done something similar to this - helicopter in, take the target, look for who you're after, and get out of there - we have probably done it now 1,000 times," said Clinton. Walking through various scenarios Even with that experience on the ground, Clinton said President Barack Obama's advisors worked through every contingency they could think of in assessing the bin Laden raid: What if something went wrong with the helicopters, like in the failed effort to rescue hostages in Iran in 1980? When was the next moonless night? What would Pakistan do? "We did our very best to try to give the presi...

Geithner, Clinton Wont Cancel China Trip

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner have no plans to cancel their trip to China because of the reported U.S. protection of a fugitive Chinese activist, according to a State Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Earlier this week, legal activist Chen Guangcheng escaped house arrest in Shandong province, where he had been held since his release from prison in September 2010, Midland, Texas-based ChinaAid, a U.S.-based human rights group, reported on its website . Chen, who is blind, is now under U.S. protection and talks are taking place between the U.S. and China about his status, ChinaAids founder Bob Fu said in an e-mail today, citing people close to the situation that he didnt identify. Earlier the group had said he was in a safe location in Beijing. Clinton and Geithner are due to arrive in Beijing for annual talks May 3-4. The trip wont be canceled because of Chen or because of consideration being given by the U.S....

Clinton Wears Out Pumps in Pushing Smart Power Globally

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she wore out several pairs of pumps in the shoe-leather diplomacy that has taken her almost a million miles around the globe as the top U.S. diplomat. The results are beginning to pay off, she told admirers last night as she accepted a public service award at a dinner held by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. Careful diplomacy persuaded the United Nations Security Council , including Russia and China , to impose crippling sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, Clinton said. Similar diplomatic efforts stopped a massacre in Libya and ousted dictator Muammar Qaddafi , she said. Without Americas high-level diplomacy, cajoling, hand- holding and arm-twisting, the coalition that protected Libyan civilians never would have come together or stayed together, Clinton said. Time and again, Clinton has pushed womens rights in dealing with crises around the globe. She criticized Egypts transitional government in Decemb...

Welcoming to the state department the British tycoon Richard Branson, Clinton hailed the space tourism pioneer for being "such a strong proponent for business-as-unusual". "I'm excited he is here because many, many, many years ago, I wanted to be an astronaut and I think he may be my last chance to live out that particular dream," Clinton, 64, said to laughter from the audience. Branson in October opened the world's first-ever commercial spaceport in the New Mexico desert and hopes that his company, Virgin Galactic, will kick off a new era of space tourism with passengers paying $200 000 a ride. Branson quipped that members of the rival Republican Party had already offered to pay Clinton's way into space. "So it's all paid for, all sorted,"...

"TIME has honored so many national and global leaders; you couldn't possibly acknowledge every one. There's many I haven't had a chance to meet yet - I was sort of hoping Kim Jong-un would show up. I don't think he's here but if you catch sight of him, let me know. We're still trying to figure out what he's all about," Clinton joked. She added, "But I do want to give a shout-out to Angela Merkel and Dilma Rousseff and Portia Miller, Christine Lagarde, who are also on this list and prove once again that you actually can run the world in heels and pantsuits." But the former New York Senator and First Lady spent half of her speech reminding the leaders present ...

Lawmaker asks Hillary Clinton to reconsider decision on visa to Narendra Modi

WASHINGTON: A US lawmaker has asked the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton , to reconsider the government's decision against issuing a diplomatic visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi , drawing strong reactions from the Indian American Muslim community here. Congressman Joe Walsh , a right wing conservative Republican and a tea party favourite has written a letter to Clinton, requesting her to consider granting a diplomatic visa to Modi. The letter attracted strong reaction from the Indian American Muslim community who yesterday demanded that the State Department should not change its 2005 policy on Modi's visa. Clinton is yet to respond to the letter, which was written by Congressman Walsh more than a fortnight ago, but sources in the State Department said there has been no change in its policy with regard to Modi's visa and would not change till the matter is sub-judice. Hillary Clinton speaks on US foreign policy, American politics while visiting Hendricks Chapel

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton admits to making mistakes, a concern she said often stops U.S. officials from becoming more involved in world affairs because they are too afraid of error. We have to be more willing to take some risk. We cant sit around and wait 48 hours to respond to a story that is breaking, said Clinton during her Monday visit to campus. Clinton encouraged Syracuse University students to make mistakes rather than do nothing during America and the World, a conversation with James Steinberg, dean of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Steinberg served as deputy secretary of state to Clinton before coming to Maxwell in July 2011. Hundreds of hopeful attendees waited hours in a line that stretched across the Quad for the chance to see Clinton. William Hague and Hillary Clinton have discussed Neil Heywood case

"Foreign and Commonwealth Office officials have also had regular discussions with US officials in Washington and London. "The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs ... (Mr Hague), has discussed the case with the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton." Last week, the Foreign Affairs Select Committee also asked Mr Hague questions about Mr Heywood's profession and whether he had supplied information to the British Consulate or Embassy. State media reports in China have suggested that investigations by authorities there indicate Mr Heywood was a victim of homicide. He was a friend of the family of Bo Xilai, a former rising star in Chinese politics who served as local party chief in Chongqing but was suspended from the Politburo in April amid allegations of "serious discipline violations". Chinese authorities initially said Mr Heywood's death was down to alcohol overconsumption but Mr Hague admitted last week that Foreign Office staff were ...
