Clinton visits Croatia, set to become newest EU member

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held up Croatia as a model of democracy in the Balkans during a visit Wednesday that comes just eight months before it joins the European Union. "Nations around the world today are making the difficult transition to democracy, and they can look to you, they can look to Croatia, as a model," said Clinton after meeting the country's top officials. Clinton, who has come to Croatia on the third day of her five-nation Balkan tour, met first with the country's Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic, before talks with President Ivo Josipovic. The talks were focused on Croatia's future membership in the European Union, its role in NATO and strengthening economic cooperation between Zagreb and Washington. "The United States is very proud to have the opportunity to work with Croatia in NATO, and we are looking forward to Croatia?s joining the EU next year," Clinton said. Clinton to push Kosovo to step up EU, NATO integration

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will hold talks with Kosovo leaders Wednesday to urge them to step up its efforts for EU and NATO integration in order to secure peace in the volatile Balkans region which she is touring. Clinton was welcomed at Pristina airport on Tuesday by Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga, ahead of the formal talks beginning early Wednesday. Together with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who has joined her on part of her five-nation regional tour, Clinton came to Kosovo from Serbia, where she pushed Belgrade to normalise relations with Kosovo, even without recognising the independence of the breakaway territory. "The United States urges all parties to implement the agreements reached to date (in the EU-brokered talks between Belgrade and Pristina), and to advance concrete measures to normalise relations," Clinton said after meeting Serbian leaders in Belgrade. The disputed status of Kosovo is the main bone of contention still affecting regiona...

Clinton presses Algeria on Mali intervention plan

ALGIERS (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed regional power Algeria on Monday to support an Africa-led military intervention in northern Mali , a senior U.S. official said. Clinton's one-day visit comes amid mounting international pressure on Algeria over the crisis in Mali, where a March military coup was followed by a revolt that has seen Tuareg rebels and Islamist militants, some linked to al Qaeda , seize control of the northern two-thirds of the country. The senior U.S. official said after the talks that Clinton argued strongly that counter-terror efforts in Mali could not wait for a political resolution to Mali's problems. "The secretary underscored ... that it is very clear that a political process and our counter-terrorism efforts in Mali need to work in parallel," the official said. "We have an awful lot at stake here, and an awful lot of common interests, and there's a strong recognition that Algeria has to be a central pa...

Clinton arrives in Bosnia at start of her Balkans tour

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Bosnia Monday to kick off a five-nation Balkans tour during which she will push for greater integration of the volatile region into the EU and NATO. Clinton, who will on Tuesday be joined by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, was expected to call on Bosnia to speed up reforms in the country still deeply divided along ethnic lines 17 years after the 1992-1995 war there. "I think the message from Secretary Clinton and High Representative Ashton will be that... we would like to see (Bosnia) becoming a member of European Union/NATO, but we really need the necessary reforms," a State Department spokesman, asking to remain anonymous, said ahead of the trip. Clinton and Ashton are due to meet with Bosnia's three-man presidency and top international officials. Following the US-brokered 1995 Dayton peace deal, Bosnia consists of two semi-independent entities -- the Serbs's Republika Srpska and the Muslim-Croat...

Clinton arrives in Algeria for Mali, Al-Qaeda talks

ALGIERS: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Algeria on Monday, with the political crisis in neighbouring Mali a central focus of her scheduled talks with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Clinton's plane touched down shortly before 0530 GMT at Algiers international airport at the start of her second visit to the Algerian capital following a trip last year. Also on the agenda, according to the US State Department, is the general issue of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). Clinton is to meet Bouteflika and other top officials in Algeria, which shares a long border with Mali, where extremists and rebel groups took over large swathes of the country's north after a March coup. Mauritania and Algeria have called for dialogue in a bid to reach a political solution to the crisis. "Algeria being the strongest Sahel State became a critical partner in dealing with AQIM," a state department official said aboard the plane carrying Clinton in. "In the context ...

By Olivia Fleming PUBLISHED: 10:49 EST, 26 October 2012 | UPDATED: 12:22 EST, 26 October 2012 Long before the scrunchies, and constant critiquing of her various political hair styles, Hillary Rodham Clinton was a Sixties college graduate wearing striped pants and John Lennon-style glasses. Today marks her 65th birthday, and to commemorate, LIFE magazine has released a series of previously unpublished black and white images of a then 22-year-old Miss Rodham, taken by Lee Balterman at her suburban Park Ridge, Illinois, home in the summer of 1969. The candid photographs of the current U.S. Secretary of State, former First Lady, and champion of women worldwide, were taken less than two weeks after she graduated, where she first attracted national attention for her remarks as the first student commencement speaker at Wellesley College. Clinton heads for Algeria, Balkans

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will leave Washington Sunday to travel to Algeria, for discussions on the Mali crisis, before joining EU diplomatic chief Catherine Ashton in the Balkans. The State Department said Clinton will meet Tuesday with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria, which shares a long border with Mali where extremists and rebel groups have taken over large swathes of the country's north after a coup in March. Mauritania and Algeria have called for dialogue in a bid to reach a political solution to the crisis, after ruling out sending troops to Mali to battle extremist militia. The common influence among the fundamentalist armed groups ruling northern Mali is Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, which originated in Algeria and is active in regional countries including Mauritania. The UN Security Council approved a resolution on October 12 that presses West African nations to speed up preparations for an international military intervention aimed at reconquering...

Clinton hints at keeping post in a second Obama term

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is leaving the door open to continuing to serve under President Barack Obama should he win a second term that would begin in January. One of Obama's most popular cabinet members, Clinton has repeatedly insisted she would leave her office as America's top diplomat at the end of the Obama administration's first term. But she hinted at serving beyond then in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Thursday. "A lot of people have talked to me about staying," Clinton said. She said it was "unlikely" that the fallout from the deadly September 11 attack on the US consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi would force her to stay on, though left that possibility open for the first time since she took office in 2009. The "terrible events" that led to the death of the US ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were "one of the most challenging" periods of her tenure, Clinton said. He...

Hillary Clinton's Fashion: 65 Looks For 65 Years!

Saturday, 27 October 2012 08:38 Huffington Post Hits: 0 There's no denying that 2012 was Hillary Clinton's Year Of Cool. There was the epic photo of the secretary of state fiddling with her Blackberry while wearing sunglasses and the subsequent "Texts from Hillary" meme. Then Hillary upped the ante by participating in the meme itself (she knows what "LOLZ" means!)... then went out partying in Colombia, dancing and taking swigs from a bottle of beer. And she did it all in style. Hillary, who celebrates her 65th on Friday, has always had a distinct fashion sense, one that both incorporates trends (hello, giant glasses) and stays true to who she is (what up, pantsuits). Even when naysayers diss her scrunchies or critics question her no-makeup look, Hillz sticks to what works: tailored pants, structured jackets, statement jewelry, hair accessories and stunna shades. In honor of her 65th birthday and her epic year, here are 65 photos of the Hillary Clinton style...

Texas attorney general demands Hillary Clinton, political UN poll watchers respect Texas law

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has officially put Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on notice: United Nations-affiliated election monitors are not above Texas law . The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe ( OSCE ) recently announced it would send dozens of international poll monitors to the United States to monitor the upcoming elections. It appears that OSCE is under the misimpression that the State Department can somehow help its representatives circumvent the Texas Election Code, Abbott wrote in a letter sent Thursday to the State Department. If the OSCE does not want to follow Texas law, then perhaps it should send its representatives to another state. Texas law prohibits unauthorized persons from entering a polling place or loitering within 100 feet of a polling places entrance on Election Day, Abbott wrote. OSCE monitors are expected to follow that law like everyone else. (RELATED: Texas attorney general warns UN poll watchers to keep their distance ) ...

Hillary Clinton on Work, Family Balance

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton turned an official event at the State Department focused on the importance of balancing work and family into a personal conversation, sharing her own experiences as a mother, wife, daughter lawyer and stateswoman. Speaking to a packed crowd at the kick-off of the department's 2012 National Work-Life and Family Month, Clinton seemed particularly proud of how she managed to get her old law firm in Arkansas to establish a maternity leave program. "Many years ago when I was pregnant, I was in a law firm," she said. "I was the only female partner. And they'd never had a female partner, and certainly not a pregnant female partner. And they literally just were not sure what to do with me. I would walk down the corridor, getting more and more pregnant, and the men in the firm would, like, look away. Shh. Never say a word. And I just kind of thought I'm just going to wait to see if anybody says anything to me about the fact that I...

Hillary Clinton might stay on in a second Obama term. What about 2016?

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is suggesting for the first time that she might be willing to stick around, at least for a while, in a second Obama administration . Are you listening, women voters ? President Obama s most popular cabinet member (judging by consistent polling over Mr. Obamas term) has long insisted that she would leave her office at the end of his first term, no matter what. But in a Wall Street Journal interview published Thursday, Secretary Clinton leaves the door open to continuing into a second term, saying, A lot of people have talked to me about staying. OBAMA VS.
