Democratic fantasy ticket: Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton

Image
Tom Blackwell Dec 30, 2011 10:55 PM ET | Last Updated: Dec 31, 2011 12:41 AM ET As Abe Lincoln geared up for his re-election campaign in 1864, the Republican unceremoniously jettisoned his first-term vice-president and picked Andrew Johnson, a southerner from the rival Democratic Party, as his surprising running mate. Lincoln hoped to broaden the administrations appeal after four years of the catastrophic Civil War, and the gambit seemed to work. The bipartisan team swept into office, before a pistol-packing theatre actor ended it all for the president a few months later. With Barack Obama likely facing a daunting battle in next years race, some Democrats have suggested an unusual reprise of the Lincoln manoeuvre: Why not have Joe Biden, the current Vice-President, swap jobs with Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State? An Obama-Clinton ticket, as the theory goes, would revive a Democratic base disillusioned by the Presidents compromises on various issues, and inject some verve into...

Gingrich chokes up in Iowa recalling his mother

DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - Struggling Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich choked up at a campaign event on Friday, wiping away tears as he discussed his late mother in a display of emotion that was reminiscent of Hillary Clinton 's game-changing teary moment in 2008. At a campaign event in Iowa targeted at moms, Gingrich lost his composure repeatedly when asked about his mother, who suffered from depression and bipolar disorder before she died in 2003. The audience of mostly women was sympathetic as Gingrich, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, cried. "I do policy much easier than I do personal," Gingrich said by way of recovery, to laughter from the crowd. The emotional scene was reminiscent of a pivotal moment in the Democratic presidential race in 2008. Hillary Clinton, who lost her frontrunner status when Barack Obama won the first Democratic nominating contest in Iowa, teared up briefly during a campaign stop in New Hampshire, the n...

Some Political New Years Resolutions

Mitt Romney : Take a long, hard look at Hillary Clinton 's 2008 presidential campaign With all of the rising and falling among the field of Republican presidential candidates over the last few months--from Michele Bachmann to Rick Perry to Herman Cain to Newt Gingrich to Ron Paul--Mitt Romney has remained steadily near the front. Now, less than a week before the Iowa Caucasus it would be easy to get over-confident, which is what Romney's campaign seems to be doing . Remember four years ago when Hillary Clinton was assumed to be the presumptive nominee for the Democrats? In mid-December of 2007 some polls even suggested that she had a 29 point lead over Barack Obama for the nomination, and we all know how that turned out. Rick Perry: Figure out how the federal government works It would be a safe assumption to think that a presidential candidate would have a pretty good grasp on the government and how it works. December 28, 2011, 4:34 pm By MARJORIE CONNELLY Four years ago, Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton were battling each other for the Democratic presidential nomination. Now, Mrs. Clinton is President Obamas secretary of state, and together they top the lists as the Gallup polls most admired woman and most admired man of 2011. Mrs. Clinton has finished first on the list of most admired women 16 times since 1993, coming in second in 1995 and 1996 to Mother Teresa and in 2001 to Laura Bush. No one else has been named No. 1 man or woman in the Gallup poll as often as Mrs. Clinton. Mr. Obamas finish is his fourth time on the top. Presidents often take that spot: a sitting or newly elected president has been named the most admired man by the Gallup poll for past 31 years, and 55 out of the 65 times the question has been asked. The Rev. Billy Graham has never been No. 1, but he has been in the top 10 more than any other man 55 times since 1955. This year, he is in third place, followi...

Clinton concerned over democracy in Hungary: report

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has voiced concerns over democratic freedom in Hungary in a letter to the prime minister, a local media said on Tuesday. A spokesman for Prime Minister Viktor Orban confirmed he had received a letter from Clinton, but did not disclose its contents. Orban's centre-right party scored a landslide victory in a 2010 election. Orban's government went on to pass measures critics say weaken institutions such as the Constitutional Court and meddle with press freedom. The letter "put in writing the things she had articulated verbally before," spokesman Peter Szijjarto told the national news agency MTI on Tuesday. "The prime minister will, naturally, respond to the letter in due course." Clinton visited Budapest in June to hold talks with Orban and told a subsequent news conference that she was concerned about democratic freedoms in Hungary, where she said essential checks and balances must be strengthen...

Peaceful N Korea transition - Clinton

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called for a 'peaceful and stable' transition in North Korea and says the United States wants better relations with its people after leader Kim Jong-il's death. 'We both share a common interest in a peaceful and stable transition in North Korea as well as ensuring regional peace and stability,' Clinton said after talks with Japan's Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba on Monday. 'We reiterate our hope for improved relations with the people of North Korea and remain deeply concerned about their well-being,' she said. Clinton said that the United States has also been in 'close touch' with South Korea along with China and Russia, which were all involved in now-moribund denuclearisation talks with North Korea. Gemba - whose visit was scheduled before the shock announcement of Kim's death - agreed with the US stance on North Korea and urged renewed efforts over the cases of Japanese abducted by the communist re...

Hillary Clinton fell short on jobs pledge

WASHINGTON -- When Hillary Rodham Clinton ran for the Senate in 2000, she promised to bring 200,000 jobs to upstate New York. But between January 2001, when Clinton was sworn in as a senator, and January 2010, when she resigned to become secretary of state, the northern suburbs and upstate region lost more than 100,000 jobs. Over that same time period, employment declined throughout the nation. Clinton's tenure as a senator included the recession of 2007-09, when millions of Americans lost jobs. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Clinton's successor, has come up with her own strategy for boosting employment in upstate New York -- a five-part plan to provide federal loans, grants and bonding assistance for local governments, and a new tax credit for agriculture. But unlike Clinton, Gillibrand isn't predicting how many jobs her plan might create. "It's very hard to determine, first of all," Gillibrand said. "And second of all, you are going to try to pitch for each p...

The Secretary had a very good call with the new Egyptian prime minister, Ganzouri, last afternoon... and it was a very productive call, all focused in the right direction..., State Department spokesperson, Ms Victoria Nuland, told reporters. She said Ms Clinton had been greatly concerned, and particularly concerned about the horrible images. Egypt: Hillary Clinton's Remarks 'Interference In Internal Affairs'

Image
CAIRO, Dec 21 (Reuters) - The Egyptian foreign minister said on Wednesday that Egypt would not accept any interference in its internal affairs, in response to criticism by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the way security forces dealt with women protesters. In a speech on Monday, Clinton criticised the actions of Egyptian security forces as showing the "systematic degradation" of women that "disgraces the state", some of the strongest U.S. language used against Egypt's new rulers. Footage showed Egyptian soldiers beating protesters with batons, often after they had fallen to the ground, in what activists described as a forcible attempt to clear a sit-in demanding a swifter transfer to civilian rule. The clashes since Friday have left at least 13 dead and hundreds wounded. "Egypt does not accept any interference in its internal affairs and conducts communi...

'Draft Hillary' robo-calls hit some states

Image
Published: Dec. 21, 2011 at 8:32 AM WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A robo-call advocating U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for president is the latest event dropping Clinton's name into the 2012 race, observers say. Clinton has made it clear that she doesn't intend to remain in the political arena in 2012 and beyond -- in fact she wants to be a grandmother now that her daughter, Chelsea , is married. "It's ridiculous. This is all just silly mischief-making by a very small group of people ... with nothing better to do," Mo Elleithee , Clinton's national press secretary during the 2008 campaign, told The Washington Post in an article published Tuesday. Robo-calls were made in Maryland, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, and Michigan, Florida, New York and Arizona saying the country would be "better off today if Hillary Clinton was our president." The calls urge listeners to go to RunHillary2012.net and sign a petition to try to persuade Clinton to run ...

Calls By Douglas Schoen And Patrick Caddell For Hillary 2012 Are Getting Progressively Dumber

Douglas Schoen and Patrick Caddell really want people to believe that they authentically want Hillary Clinton, and not Barack Obama, to be president. So much so that they keep publishing the same op-ed on the matter with minor thematic tweaks, and people keep running it despite the fact that it is, essentially, high-toned gibberish. But, whatever, Politico needed to be the fourth or fifth media organization to peddle this idea to its readers, so let's take a look-see . The new bold idea that Schaddell brings to the table today is for Democrats in New Hampshire to get behind nominating Clinton as president through a write-in campaign: First, and most important, ordinary Democrats and independents in New Hampshire should mobilize behind a grass-roots effort to write in Clinton's name during the Jan. 10 Democratic primary. Second, a committed group of Democrats with resources and stature needs to help facilitate an authentic cit...

Hillary Clinton Urges Peaceful Transition in North Korea

WASHINGTON (AP) The Obama administration called for a peaceful and stable leadership transition in North Korea on Monday but made few demands on a nuclear-armed nation known for its unpredictability, poverty and hostility to the United States. Prospects for new nuclear disarmament talks involving North Korea and the United States appeared to dim with the unexpectedly sudden death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and uncertainty surrounding the planned succession to his politically untested son. Top Obama administration national security officials are focusing intelligence and other assets on the opaque internal politics of the reclusive communist nation that President George W. Bush once placed on an "axis of evil" enemies list. President Barack Obama conferred by phone Monday night with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to underscore the U.S. commitment to Japan and other close allies, the White House said in a statement. Obama also conveyed the importance he place...
