Analysts: Hillary Clintons record as top U.S. diplomat falls far short of greatness

WASHINGTON When Hillary Clinton joined the Obama administrations famed team of rivals, political observers were abuzz with the possibilities of a secretary of state who was already a powerful global celebrity, a former first lady and a hardened presidential candidate. Despite the star power and political savvy, however, analysts say four years later that they cant identify an enduring diplomatic approach that would add her to the list of the all-time greatest secretaries of state. Beyond Clintons far-reaching popularity and well-documented dedication to the job, theres simply no standout moment or stance that would define her tenure, the analysts say. And there are important missteps involving Pakistan, Russia and Syria. Steve Coll, a prize-winning investigative journalist and author who serves as the president of the New America Foundation research center in Washington, said a secretary of state should be judged on three main criteria: as a crisis manager, as the public face of an ad...

(FILE/UPI Photo/Brian Kersey) License photo Published: Jan. 29, 2013 at 7:59 AM WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- A super PAC backing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for president in 2016 has been registered with the Federal Election Commission. The Ready for Hillary super PAC is led by Allida Black, founder of the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project at George Washington University, who also was behind the pro-Clinton political action committee WomenCount, The Washington Post reported Monday. Ready for Hillary was registered with the FEC Friday. "Our purpose is simple: We are ready to work for Hillary to be president when she is ready to run," Black told the Center for Public Integrity, which first discovered the filing. "When our website launches in a few weeks, we plan to reach out to our grassroots networks and contributors to mobilize them to support her." The PAC'...

Hillary Clinton Supporters Set Up Super-PAC for 2016 Race

Supporters of Hillary Clinton for president have created a super-political action committee in case she decides to run for the White House in 2016. Ready for Hillary, one of two Clinton super-PACs registered with the Federal Election Commission , says on its Facebook page that it was created by five friends, including a former aide and former adviser to the New York Democrat. Clinton, who is leaving her post as secretary of state, is a former U.S. senator and first lady. Married to former President Bill Clinton , she lost the 2008 Democratic nomination to Barack Obama . She is mentioned as a potential candidate in the next presidential election, though she hasnt made any decision as to her future plans. Earlier this month, she reported that she retired her remaining debt from the 2008 campaign. We believe Hillary will see that 2016 is the right year, for the right woman for so many different reasons, the group says on its Facebook page. The goal is to be as organized and ready as poss...

Letters: Clinton swatted away her Benghazi accusers

Republican senators had their day of TV posturing as they questioned Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about the attack on our Libyan consulate. They certainly can blow off a lot of steam when something unfortunate happens, as it did in Benghazi. In fact, the State Department and the Agency for International Development receive about 1 percent of the federal budget. I did not hear Republican senators recommend increasing that allocation for the protection of our embassies, although earlier congressional testimony revealed that the only way security could have been increased in Benghazi was by taking personnel from other locations. Republicans did, however, attempt to extract their pound of flesh from Mrs. Clinton, who blew them off appropriately. In other words, we had another wasted day in a Senate committee. The most flagrant abuse of congressional immunity came from Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who declared the Benghazi attack the worst since 9/11, and that he would have fired Mrs. Clint...

Obama, Hillary Clinton to Give Joint Interview

The White House says President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will give their first joint interview to the television news show "60 Minutes," and it will air Sunday. Clinton is soon to leave her post as secretary of state, and already she is being mentioned as a possible presidential candidate for 2016. Obama and Clinton competed for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, and their relationship has been watched closely ever since. It's not clear what questions the two will face in their joint interview.

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton all smiles in joint interview

Image
Washington: Bitter rivals in the 2008 presidential campaign, President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton kept smiling at each other in a joint interview to CBS that Clinton said would have seemed "improbable" years ago. "It has been a great collaboration over the last four years. I'm going to miss her," Obama said in a televised excerpt from the CBS "60 Minutes" program that will air on Sunday. The interview, conducted at the White House on Friday, comes as Clinton prepares to step down and the Senate confirmation process moves forward for Senator John Kerry, Obama's pick to replace her. "A few years ago it would have been seen as improbable (to have a joint interview) because we had that very long, hard primary campaign," Clinton said in the excerpt. "And then President Obama asked me to be secretary of state and I said yes. And why did he ask me and why did I say yes? Because we both love our country." Clinto...

Bindi Irwin slams Hillary Clinton editors over essay

Teenage conservationist Bindi Irwin, daughter of late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, has revealed her shock that an essay she penned for Hillary Clinton was edited so heavily that her words were "twisted". Irwin, 14, was reportedly invited to write for US Secretary of State Clinton's e-journal about why she had chosen to work in wildlife conservation and wrote 1,000 words that largely focused on the issue of overpopulation. But she told Sydney's Daily Telegraph that when the piece had been edited and returned to her for approval, it had been altered so much she felt she had to withdraw it from publication. "When I got the essay back after they edited it, it was completely different," the newspaper cited her as saying. "I hadn't said anything they had put in... my words were twisted and altered and changed. I was a little bit shocked to tell you the truth." Irwin's essay described Earth's expanding population and the planet...

Hillary Clinton Wearing Special Glasses Following Concussion

Image
That is not a reflection of the window blinds in Clinton's left lens. It's a Fresnel prism. Though Hillary Clinton's glasses may have helped her communicate a range of subtle emotions during her Congressional testimony on Wednesday, they also served another, arguably more important purpose: As the Daily News noticed earlier tonight, Clinton's spectacles appear to be outfitted with a Fresnel prism, which is used to treat double vision. Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines has confirmed to Daily Intelligencer that Clinton will "be wearing these glasses instead of her contacts fo! r a period of time because of lingering issues stemming from her concussion." "With them on she sees just fine ," Reines assured us. " In fact, she got a kick out of your seven expressions and captions when she saw them crystal clear." Presumably, Clinton read the post while making the "Some People Have Too Much Time on Their Hands" Adjustment.

Rand Paul vs. Hillary Clinton: A preview of 2016?

Hillary Clinton 's assured and assertive appearance before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has only increased speculation about a possible Clinton presidential run in 2016. But the hearing has also given an unexpected jolt of publicity to another possible 2016 contender: Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R). Senator Paul , of course, had one of the most biting and most replayed exchanges with Secretary Clinton , telling her at one point: "I'm glad that you're accepting responsibility. I think that ultimately with your leaving, you accept the culpability for the worst tragedy since 9/11. And I really mean that. Had I been president at the time, and I found that you did not read the cables from Benghazi , you did not read the cables from Ambassador Stevens , I would have relieved you of your post. I think it's inexcusable." RECOMMENDED: Hillary Clinton for president? 8 Democrats who might run next time It was an eyebrow-raising moment, not only because Paul ha...

Hillary Clinton lays out daunting security hurdles in North Africa

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 - 7:54pm CNN (CNN) -- Much of the focus of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's appearance on Capitol Hill Wednesday was on whether her department failed to appreciate and respond to the risks that led to the attack in Benghazi, Libya -- and whether it had the resources to confront such risks. And, of course, on whether in the immediate aftermath, the administration characterized the attack candidly and accurately. But the hearings also illustrated how the United States is scrambling to catch up with new realities in North Africa -- and how it faces a long struggle in a new arena of instability. Clinton acknowledged that "the Arab revolutions have scrambled power dynamics and shattered security forces across the region." Looking back to her confirmation as secretary of state four years ago, Clinton said, "I don't think anybody thought [Egyptian President Hosni] Mubarak would be gone, [Libya's Moammar] Gadhafi would be gone, [...

Hillary Clinton grilled on embassy security

Published: Wednesday, January 23, 2013, 8:01 a.m. WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton insisted on Wednesday that the department is moving swiftly and aggressively to strengthen security at U.S. missions worldwide after the deadly Sept. 11 raid on the consulate in Libya. In probably her last appearance on Capitol Hill as America's top diplomat, Clinton once again took full responsibility for the department's missteps leading up to assault at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. Her voice cracking at times, Clinton said the experience was highly personal. "I stood next to President Obama as the Marines carried those flag-draped caskets off the plane at Andrews. I put my arms around the mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters," she told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at a jam-packed hearing. Her voice rising at another point, she defended U.N. Ambassador Sus...

Clinton in final bow to US lawmakers

Hillary Clinton will make one of her last major appearances as US secretary of state when she testifies to lawmakers on Wednesday about a deadly militant attack on a US mission in Libya. Despite keeping a decidedly low profile after a long period of ill health in her final weeks in office, Clinton is keen to draw a line under the deadly September 11 Benghazi assault, which triggered a political storm in the US. The hearings have also taken on added urgency as Washington reels from an attack on a remote Algerian gas plant in which three Americans were killed. The two events graphically illustrate warnings already highlighted by Clinton about the dangers posed by extremists -- and in particular Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb -- to US and western interests in northern Africa. Clinton, a former senator for New York, was initially set to testify in December after a scathing inquiry blamed "grossly inadequate" security at the outpost in Benghazi, eastern Libya, for failing to prot...
