Jan. 26 To the Editor:
To the Editor:
In his letter to the editor, Portsmouth Herald, Jan. 26, Mr. Ray Hutchinson states that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during her testimony before the Senate on the Benghazi attack on our (co! nsulate), said that the deaths of four Americans "made no difference at this point." That is not what she said!
Mrs. Clinton actually said, to paraphrase, that whether the attack was a spontaneous protest motivated by the offensive video, or whether the attack was a planned terrorist action made no difference at this point. Big difference!
Mrs. Clinton takes full responsibility for the deaths and extremely regrets them. Her outburst reflected the frustration we all feel at the incident and the continual use of the incident as a political wedge by the Republicans to gain some advantage. First they used the incident to try to hurt Obama during the re-election campaign; then they used the incident to derail the re-elected president's choice for his next secretary of state, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice; finally they are now using the incident to perhaps either derail Hillary Clinton's political ambitions, or to continue to hurt President Obama. Enough already!
No one wants to see such deaths again; we all want our diplomatic areas protected. This was a tragic incident, and no question we didn't see it coming. Let's correct the situation and move on.
